Eating salmon hurts the planet – level 2

30-01-2026 07:00

Salmon is a very common fish in Europe, but there are fewer wild salmon today. Because of this, most salmon comes from fish farms in other countries.

Norway sells the largest amount to the EU. Fish farming helps stop catching too many fish, but it also creates new problems.

Many farms keep salmon in open sea cages. Waste and chemicals go into the water and harm the environment. Fish often live very close together, so diseases spread fast. It hurts the fish, and farmers must use chemicals to solve the problems.

Animal groups say this causes pain and stress for salmon. Some farms follow better rules and use special labels. These labels help people choose better fish, but experts say they do not always stop problems at every farm.

Difficult words: common (usual, normal), amount (how much of something there is), label (a sign or mark on a product that gives information).
