Eating salmon hurts the planet – level 3
30-01-2026 07:00
Salmon is one of the most popular fish eaten in Europe; however, wild salmon populations stay low after many years of overfishing.
Most salmon that people eat today doesn’t come from rivers. It comes from fish farms in other countries, especially Norway. Farming salmon helps protect wild fish, but it also creates new problems for nature and for the fish themselves.
Many salmon farms use open cages in the sea, which means waste, chemicals, and food leftovers go straight into the water and cause pollution. Animal welfare groups also worry about crowded cages where sea lice spread fast and can harm or kill young fish. Farmers often use strong chemicals to fix this problem.
Critics say people don’t see these issues because everything happens underwater. Some farms try to work in a better way and follow higher standards. Labels like ASC help buyers find fish that should meet certain rules. However, experts warn that a label doesn’t always mean a farm causes no harm.
Difficult words: overfishing (catching too many fish so there are not enough left in the sea), leftover (food or things that are not eaten or used), standard (a rule about how something should be done).
