Energy in cold Canada – level 1

23-02-2026 07:00

Winters are very cold in northern Canada. There can be up to minus 45 degrees Celsius. People pay a lot for electricity. Fuel is hard to bring to this far place.

Now, officials and companies are testing solar power. They want to pay less. They want to use cleaner energy. In summer, the days are very long, and there is a lot of sun. The area gets strong sunlight. Many people want a change. Bad weather causes problems in their lives.

Companies see more people choosing solar panels. Power costs a lot of money. Some companies also test car chargers. They want to see if the technology works in cold places.

Difficult words: northern (in or from the north), solar (about the energy from the sun), sunlight (light which comes from the sun).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What reasons do officials and companies have for testing solar power in this remote northern region?
