Energy in cold Canada – level 2

23-02-2026 07:00

Winters are very cold in Canada’s Northwest Territories. Temperatures can drop to minus 45 degrees Celsius.

People pay high electricity prices, and it costs a lot to bring fuel to this area. Officials and businesses now test solar power to lower bills and use less fossil fuel. They say long summer days give a lot of sunlight. The area gets strong sunlight compared to many places. Many people want cleaner energy because climate change causes extreme weather and makes some communities leave their homes.

Local companies see more interest in solar energy. High power prices push people to look for new ways of making energy. Some companies also test electric cars to show the technology works in cold weather.

Difficult words: fuel (oil, gas, or coal that gives energy), bill (a paper which shows how much money you must pay), extreme (very strong or serious).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What two challenges are driving officials and businesses to test solar power in the Northwest Territories?
