Estonian schools don’t teach in Russian anymore – level 1

28-02-2025 07:00

Many people in Estonia speak Russian. Before, Russian children learn in Russian. But now they must learn in Estonian. Estonia changes this when the war in Ukraine starts.

Victoria is eight years old. She goes to school in Tallinn and studies in Estonian. Her mother speaks some Estonian and helps her. Many Russian parents do not understand Estonian. Their children have problems.

Before, Russian-speaking children are not as good at school as Estonian children. Estonia has very good schools. The government wants all children to learn well. Victoria likes learning Estonian. She wants to go to an Estonian university in the future.

Difficult words: understand (to know what something means), future (the time to come).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How might the shift to studying in Estonian present challenges for some families, and how does Victoria's experience illustrate a different outcome?
