EU leaders talk about Greenland – level 2
29-01-2026 07:00
EU leaders met in an emergency meeting because of problems with the United States over Greenland.
President Trump spoke about taking control of Greenland and using tariffs against EU countries. The EU said it will protect itself and said only Denmark and Greenland can decide what happens to Greenland.
Later, Trump pulled back his words about tariffs and said a deal with NATO could solve the problem. EU leaders felt much happier than the day before. They said it was important to stick together and show support for Denmark and Greenland.
Still, the problem is not over. Trump said Greenland is important to keep the US and the world safe. EU leaders said they accept more US soldiers but don’t agree with any change of borders. Denmark’s prime minister traveled to Greenland after the meeting.
Difficult words: tariff (a tax on things from another country), pull back (to stop or take back a plan or action), stick together (to stay united and support each other).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What did Trump propose could resolve the dispute after he backed away from his remarks about imposing tariffs?
