EU rules on social media – level 1

16-02-2026 07:00

Some countries in Europe want new rules for social media. They want to stop children under 15 or 16 from using some apps.

France plans a ban soon. The president likes this plan. Other countries think about new rules, too. Many leaders say that social media is bad for child health. They say that it can cause sleep problems. Also, children have problems focusing on one thing for a long time. Experts think that companies make money from children.

Another expert does not like a ban. He says that children need contact with friends. He wants new rules for companies, not a full ban. He says that better rules can keep children safe.

Difficult words: rule (what you can or cannot do), ban (an official stop), health (how well your body and mind feel and work).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What health problems do leaders link to children’s social media use, and what alternative to a full ban does one expert propose?
