EU´s new digital passport system – level 1
12-08-2026 07:00
The European Union has a new digital passport system. It uses photos of faces and fingerprints for people from non-EU countries. Travelers go to a machine first.
Then they see a border officer. The new check takes extra time for every person. Now, airports in Europe have very long lines. Some travelers wait for many hours. They miss their planes.
Different airports use different machines, so it is hard to solve problems. Today, travelers cannot do any checks on their phones before they travel. Greece can still use old passport stamps. Airport leaders want to stop the new system during the summer months to help people travel fast.
Difficult words: passport (an official document which you need to travel to other countries), fingerprint (the mark your finger leaves on things), miss (to arrive too late to catch a bus, train, or plane).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Why are airports in Europe experiencing very long lines?
