Food and art – level 2

28-05-2025 07:00

The magazine Bon Appétit made new recipes that look like famous art. These recipes come from paintings by well-known artists.

One painting by Helen Frankenthaler is now a falafel burger with chickpeas and onions. Another painting by Agnes Martin is now a dish with scallops and spinach sauce. A colorful painting by Judy Chicago became a salad with eggs and radishes. One dessert was a cake with three flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. It looks like a painting by artist Wayne Thiebaud. The cake also has sour cream frosting.

These dishes are not only for eating but also for enjoying art. The magazine wants people to see food in a new way. The paintings are from around 1959, a few years after Bon Appétit began.

Difficult words: falafel (small round balls made from herbs and chickpeas), chickpeas (a small bean), scallop (a kind of seafood).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which artist’s painting was transformed into a scallop dish with spinach sauce?
