Fuel from cooking oil – level 2
20-01-2025 15:00
Spain is using biofuel made from used cooking oil to power airplanes and protect the environment. People can trade frying oil for gas vouchers. Factories process the oil to create sustainable fuel.
Tests show that planes running on biofuel produce less emissions than planes using usual fuel. Therefore, they are better for the planet. Currently, only 5% of cooking oil is recycled, but this could increase with more places which collect the oil. Spain wants to use 10% biofuel in its planes by 2030, and is already building new factories to make biofuel. The EU supports this effort with rules to increase sustainable fuel use over time. Biofuel is still expensive, but costs will drop with growing production.
Difficult words: trade (to exchange something for something else), sustainable (not causing harm to the natural world), effort (activity to achieve something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is Spain's target for biofuel usage in its planes by 2030 and how does the EU support this effort?
