Greenland and Antarctica lose ice

A big study says that Greenland and Antarctica lose a lot of ice since 1979. Warm water and warm air are melting the ice very fast.

This lost ice makes the sea level 3.2 centimetres higher around the world. When the sea goes up, it brings big floods. It is dangerous for people who live near the ocean. Every centimetre of sea level rise can flood millions of homes.

Scientists look at satellite pictures for forty years. They say that the ice is safe in the past. But now it melts faster and faster every year. The water will keep going up if the planet stays warm.

Difficult words: melt (when ice turns into water), flood (when a lot of water covers land and homes), dangerous (not safe).
