Humans come from stars – level 2

01-05-2025 07:00

Stars are born inside very cold clouds of gas and dust called molecular clouds. These clouds are very big and heavy. Small parts inside the clouds come together and grow bigger.

When they get heavy enough, they fall in on themselves and form baby stars called protostars.

After some time, the inside gets hot, and a process called fusion starts. Fusion changes hydrogen into helium and gives the star energy. When a star uses all its hydrogen, it will become a white dwarf or a supernova. The star’s materials help to make new stars in the future.

Old stars made the things in our bodies, like carbon and oxygen. These stars lived a long time before the Earth, the Sun, or our galaxy. When the stars exploded, they sent their elements across space. Later, these materials came together to make planets, stars, and people. Carl Sagan, a famous scientist, said that the universe is inside us and that we are made of star stuff. This means we are all connected to the stars in a very special way.

Difficult words: white dwarf (a small hot star), explode (to break apart fast and loud), element (a basic building material of everything in the universe, for example, oxygen, carbon, iron).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What process changes hydrogen into helium and provides energy for a star?
