Hungary’s new immigration law – level 2

05-03-2024 07:00

Hungary is introducing the toughest immigration law in the EU. The reason is that more and more people are coming to the country.

The law is replacing an old one which was in effect for 16 years. It prioritizes Hungarian citizens for jobs. People from other countries can work in Hungary only if there are no Hungarian workers. Immigrants who lose jobs must leave the country within six days. A family reunion for immigrant workers is not possible anymore. Residence permits will depend on immigrants’ skills. The law also introduces a ‘golden visa’ for people who want to invest money in Hungary. These people can live in the country.

Some parties don’t agree with the law.

Difficult words: prioritize (to make something more important than something else), reunion (when two or more people come together again), residence permit (a document which says that a foreigner can live in a country).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the key changes introduced by Hungary's new immigration law and what criticisms have been raised against it?
