India needs more shopping malls – level 3

31-03-2026 15:00

India’s economy is growing fast, and millions of people now have more money to spend on luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Dior.

However, these companies are facing a major stumbling block: there are not enough luxury malls in the country.

Currently, India has only three true luxury malls—two in New Delhi and one in Mumbai. This is a tiny number for a country with nearly 1.5 billion people. Global luxury groups are ready to open more stores immediately, but high-quality retail spaces are not available. New mall projects are planned; however, they will not be finished until 2028 or later.

Although India’s luxury market is growing, it is still less than 3% of the size of China’s market. To solve this problem, some brands are using franchises with local Indian retailers to enter the market faster. Until more malls are built, the promise of India becoming a global luxury leader can’t be fulfilled.

Difficult words: stumbling block (something that prevents action or agreement), retail (selling goods directly to the public in small amounts, usually in shops or online), franchise (when a big company allows a local person to open and run a shop using the big company’s name).

What strategy are some luxury brands adopting to enter the Indian market more quickly despite the shortage of luxury malls?
