Internet archive – level 3
07-05-2025 07:00
The Internet Archive is a non-profit organization in San Francisco that works to save the history of the Internet.
It keeps snapshots of websites over time, acting like a time machine for the web. The Wayback Machine is one of its main tools, allowing users to see past versions of websites. It constantly scans the internet, which changes every day. The Archive also stores physical items like books, music, and videos, which are later digitized.
Founder Brewster Kahle and director Mark Graham believe it is important to save this information for future generations. Some users, like former Air Force engineer Jessica Peterson, are grateful that the Archive saved material the government removed. She found her deleted videos through the Wayback Machine.
Recently, the Archive faced political pressure after some US government websites were taken down or changed during the Trump administration. Experts say the amount of lost content is unusual and concerning. Despite these threats, the Archive continues its work to protect global digital history.
Difficult words: snapshot (a photo), constantly (all the time), digitized (turned into digital form).
