Iran and oil prices – level 1

28-01-2026 07:00

Iran makes some oil, but not as much as big oil countries. Protests in Iran make oil prices go up. People are worried. Only this can also make oil prices go up.

Iran cannot sell oil freely, so it sells mainly to China. Iran is near a narrow sea route. Many oil ships pass there. If problems grow bigger, ships cannot get through.

Only one country has much extra oil ready. If Iran stops selling oil, others cannot help quickly. Higher oil prices mean higher prices for people. Travel and transport cost more.

Difficult words: protest (an action where people show that they are unhappy about something), freely (easily, openly), route (a way to go from one place to another).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What could happen to oil prices if protests in Iran grow large enough to block the narrow sea route through which many oil ships pass?
