Iran and oil prices – level 3

28-01-2026 07:00

Iran is not one of the world’s largest oil producers; however, recent protests in the country have pushed oil prices higher.

Investors worry that conflict could reduce oil supply at a time when the global market has little extra oil available. Even fear alone can move prices, because traders react quickly to risk. That’s why oil markets responded strongly to events in Iran.

Iran produces much less oil than countries like the United States or Saudi Arabia, and sanctions limit where it can sell its oil. Most Iranian oil now goes to China. Still, Iran sits near the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow sea route where about one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. Any trouble there could slow oil transport and affect many countries.

Only a few oil producers have spare capacity, and Saudi Arabia holds most of it. If Iranian oil exports stopped, others couldn’t easily replace them. Oil supply is stable for now, but the political situation in the area worries many people.

Difficult words: sanction (an official limit by governments), route (a path or way to go from one place to another, like a road or sea path), spare (a path for travel).
