Measles in Samoa – level 1

More than 3,700 people in Samoa have measles. It is an infectious disease that is usual for children. They get a fever and a rash on their skin. It is also a dangerous disease, more than 50 people die from it in Samoa already.

The situation is Samoa is serious. Officials close schools and other public places. People need a vaccination which helps to stop the disease. However, some people are afraid of a vaccination. In the past, some children die after a vaccination. Currently, 25 percent of people in Samoa get a vaccination, however this is not enough. Officials must vaccinate 95 percent of the population, if they want to stop the disease.

Difficult words: infectious (a type of a disease that one person can get from another one if they are near each other), disease (an illness), vaccination (an injection which helps to stop a disease).
