New African Football League starts – level 2

24-10-2023 15:00

A new football league in Africa called the African Football League started in Tanzania.

The league features eight teams and it began with a match between Simba and Al Ahly. The two teams tied, and they’ll play again in Cairo. This league is a bit different from what FIFA president Gianni Infantino proposed in 2020. He suggested a 24-team tournament with a big 200 million-dollar prize. His idea was to keep top talent in Africa. But the actual league is a knockout competition. It will last 17 days, each participating team will get 1 million dollars and the winner will get 4 million dollars.

The league has only one sponsor, Visit Saudi, the tourism authority of Saudi Arabia.

Difficult words: tie (to end with the same number of points for each player or team), knockout competition (a tournament in which the loser immediately ends), participating (taking part).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What impact will this new football league have on African football?
