Phone-free schools – level 1
23-05-2025 07:00
Two schools in Edinburgh say no to phones at school. They are Portobello and Queensferry High Schools. Portobello starts earlier. Queensferry starts on May 14.
Students from S1 to S6 put their phones in a special bag in the morning. The bag has a magnet lock. Students keep the bag but cannot open it. Teachers and parents talk for many months. Most parents at Portobello say yes to the new phone rule.
The schools want students to look at the teacher and not the phone. It is better for the teacher and for the students, too, because they learn more.
Difficult words: S1 to S6 (six years of secondary school in Scotland, for children who are 12 – 18 years old), magnet (a thing which pulls some metals), rule (something what people must or must not do).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is the purpose of requiring students to place their phones in magnet-locked bags each morning?
