Phone-free schools – level 2
23-05-2025 07:00
Two schools in Edinburgh, Portobello and Queensferry High Schools, are the first in Scotland to stop students from using phones at school. Portobello started the rule earlier, Queensferry began on May 14.
Every student from S1 to S6 puts their phone in a special bag at the start of the school day. These bags lock with a magnet. Students keep the bag with them, but they cannot use their phones until the school day ends. The schools talked to students, parents, and carers for six months before they made this new rule.
Most parents at Portobello liked the idea. The schools hope the rule will help students stay focused and not look at their phones in class.
Difficult words: S1 to S6 (six years of secondary school in Scotland, for children who are 12 – 18 years old), magnet (a thing which pulls some metals), focused (giving all attention to something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How long did Portobello and Queensferry High Schools consult with students, parents and carers before introducing the new phone rule?
