Picasso Portrait on Auction – level 2

28-02-2018 07:00

A famous Picasso portrait went up on auction in London, and it could sell for around $50 million.

The painting is special because it is multi-faceted, as it is a portrait of Marie-Thérèse Walter, and there is also a reference to the ‘Weeping Woman’, which is another painting.

In the silhouette, there is a reference to Dora Maar who was Picasso’s muse and lover. Maar replaced Marie-Thérèse and was Picasso’s primary muse by 1938.

Difficult words: multi-faceted (when something has many features, there is a lot of ‘information’ in it), reference (a connection), silhouette (a shadow), muse (a person who inspires an artist).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
