Plants in the Arctic are changing – level 1

09-06-2025 15:00

The Arctic is very cold, but it is warming fast. This change is bad for animals like caribou. It is also bad for plants.

Some plants grow bigger now. These plants are called shrubs. They take up more space, too. Caribou do not find their food, like lichen, so easily. It is also hard for them to move. Caribou need to run fast sometimes. But big shrubs are a problem. People in the north need caribou. They hunt caribou for food. Caribou are also important in their culture.

Climate change is not going to happen in the future. It is here now. People and animals feel it every day.

Difficult words: caribou (a large animal which lives in cold places), shrub (a small bushy plant), lichen (a small plant which grows on rocks and trees).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How does the expansion of larger shrubs impact caribou in terms of finding food and moving quickly?
