Police fight a gang in Rio de Janeiro – level 1

31-10-2025 15:00

Police in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, fight a big drug gang. Many people die — 60 men and 4 police officers.

The gang lives in favelas. Favelas are poor areas with small houses. They use cars, helicopters, and many guns. They take some people and find a lot of drugs. Some people go to the hospital. The boss of Rio de Janeiro says that it is the biggest police job ever. People in the city feel scared. Some schools close and buses burn.

The United Nations and Human rights groups say that this fight is bad. They want the police to explain what happens.

Difficult words: gang (a group of people who do illegal things together, like sell drugs or steal), poor (having little money or basic things like food or a home), scared (afraid).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What have the United Nations and human rights groups asked the police to do in response to this fight?
