Police fight a gang in Rio de Janeiro – level 2
31-10-2025 15:00
A big police raid in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, killed 60 suspects and four police officers.
The police attacked the Red Command gang in two poor areas called favelas. They used helicopters and armored cars and arrested 81 people. Police also took many guns and drugs. The city’s governor said it was the biggest operation in Rio’s history. Human rights groups and the United Nations said the violence was too much and asked for checking what happened. Many people were scared as buses burned and schools closed.
Experts said the raid will not stop the gangs because police often arrest small criminals, not the big bosses.
Difficult words: raid (a sudden attack by police or soldiers), suspect (a person police think did a crime), armored (covered with strong metal to stay safe).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What did human rights groups and the United Nations demand after the operation?
