Qatar National Sports Day – level 3
16-02-2026 15:00
Qatar celebrates National Sports Day on the second Tuesday of February each year. It is a public holiday, and many businesses close for the day. The government wants people to focus on health and take part in sports instead of just watching them.
In recent years, Qatar has become a major center for international sport and has hosted large events such as the football World Cup. However, on this day, citizens and residents don’t sit and cheer. They join activities such as running, football, cricket, yoga, and long walks. The royal family, ministries, and private companies also take part.
The day is not only about fun. It is a response to the problem of obesity among adults and children. The government has invested in parks, including air-conditioned spaces, to support exercise even in summer. National Sports Day sends a clear message that an active life is important for public health.
Difficult words: major (very important or big), citizen (a person who legally belongs to a country), air-conditioned (cooled with a machine that makes the air inside a building cold).
