Scientists stop illegal gold mining – level 1

19-12-2024 07:00

Brazil is using science to stop illegal gold mining. Scientists study gold to learn where it comes from. They use special tools to find small bits of other materials, like dirt. They show where the gold is from.

Illegal gold mining is a big problem in Brazil. It harms the Amazon rainforest and brings crime. Almost half of Brazil’s gold comes from illegal mining. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva starts a program to stop it. The program helps police catch more illegal gold this year than last year.

Other countries like Colombia and France want to use Brazil’s new method. Brazil says that it will help teach others how to find out where gold comes from.

Difficult words: mining (getting minerals and materials from the ground), crime (illegal activity), method (the way of doing something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the purpose of the program initiated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil and how has it impacted illegal gold mining?
