Serbia mass shootings – level 1

09-05-2023 07:00

Last week, two very bad incidents happen in Serbia.

On Wednesday, a boy shoots people in a school in Belgrade. The boy is only 14 years old. The gun belongs to his father. Eight children and a security guard die. Police catch the boy. The school opens again on Thursday. But people are very sad. The government says that there is mourning for three days. The next day, a man shoots at people near a village south of Belgrade. He is shooting from his car. He hurts 14 people. Eight people die. Police catch him, too.

Before the shootings, people think that Serbia is safe. But now they know that it is not. Serbia has a lot of guns. In the world, only Yemen and the United States have more guns.

Difficult words: incident (when something happens), security guard (a person whose job is to watch a place and keep it safe), mourning (when a person is sad because someone dies or something very bad happens).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What do you think needs to be done in Serbia to better protect citizens from gun violence?
