South Korean president arrested – level 1

17-01-2025 15:00

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is in prison for trying to use martial law. This is the first time a president in South Korea is arrested.

Police break into his home to take him. Yoon goes with the police because he does not want more violence. But he says that the arrest is not legal. Yoon’s supporters protest outside his house. They stay in the cold.

Now, Yoon is in a prison in Seoul. Officials ask him questions about his actions. The court has six months to decide if he will lose his job. If so, there will be a new election in two months. This shows South Korea is following its democratic rules.

Difficult words: martial law (when soldiers rule a country), violence (hurting others), election (choosing a new leader).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the potential consequences for Yoon Suk Yeol if the court decides against him, according to the text?
