South Sudan Facebook and TikTok ban – level 1
03-02-2025 15:00
South Sudan lifts the ban on Facebook and TikTok. The government makes the ban because videos show South Sudanese people getting killed in Sudan.
Many people share the videos. They start to protest. Officials remove the videos. People cannot see them anymore. Social media violence shows that authorities must control what people post online. At the same time, they must keep people’s rights safe.
Some groups say that the Sudanese army attacks people in Sudan. The army says that the attacks are only mistakes of a few people. Many people film and share the videos, which makes things worse.
Difficult words: lift the ban (to stop an official rule that people must not do or use something), remove (to take something away), violence (hurting or killing someone).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What reasons are given in the text for why authorities must control what people post online, and how does this relate to the situation in Sudan?
