The Amani Festival moves to another place – level 2

04-03-2026 07:00

The Amani Festival is a famous cultural event in Goma, DR Congo. In 2026, it will not take place there because of problems in the area. Instead, it will take place in Lubumbashi in southern Congo.

Organisers say it would be difficult to organise the festival in Goma because some artists may not want to travel to a dangerous area. M23 rebels took control of Goma in January 2025.

The festival started in 2014 and stands for peace and living together. Many people in Goma are sad that the festival is moving, but they understand the reason. Organisers say the festival is still about peace, culture, and hope for young people.

Difficult words: organiser (a person who plans and prepares an event), rebel (a person who fights against the government or authority), peace (a situation with no war or fighting).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Which rebel group’s control of Goma in January 2025 is mentioned as a factor in the festival’s relocation?
