The Cannes Film Festival – level 2

19-05-2025 07:00

The Cannes Film Festival started with many famous actors walking on the red carpet. But this year, there was also talk about war and politics.

French actress Juliette Binoche spoke about Fatima Hassouna, a 25-year-old photojournalist from Gaza. Fatima died in an Israeli air strike one day after learning that a film with her in it would play at the festival. Almost 400 people who work in film signed a letter. They want to stop the violence in Gaza. Some asked Juliette why she didn’t sign the letter. She said that art can still speak, even when people can’t.

The festival also showed movies from Ukraine, Iran, Japan, and the US. Tom Cruise will come to show his new Mission Impossible movie. Cannes is about films, but this year, many people are thinking about world problems.

Difficult words: photojournalist (a person who creates news mainly by using photos), violence (actions which hurt people).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What did Juliette Binoche say art can do, even when people can’t?
