Tourism may hurt Red Sea beach – level 2

21-04-2025 07:00

Ras Hankorab is a beach in southern Egypt. It is inside a national park and has clear water, white sand, and special animals like turtles and coral.

The government wants to build small hotels and other places for tourists there. Many people don’t like this idea. Tourism is important for Egypt’s money. The government thinks more tourists will help the country. They say they will take care of nature when they build these new places. They also want to check that nature is safe.

But some people say the government didn’t ask locals before doing this. Many locals can’t visit the beach anymore. Also, some people lost their small jobs in tourism. Nature groups want the beach to stay natural and clean.

Difficult words: national park (a special area where nature and animals are protected), local (a person who lives in a place or area).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How might the government’s promise to protect nature while promoting tourism be challenged by local residents and environmental groups?
