Turkey has the first astronaut in space – level 2

23-01-2024 15:00

Alper Gezeravcı, Turkey’s first astronaut, joined three other crew members in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule for a 36-hour journey to the International Space Station (ISS).

The mission, organized by Axiom Space, involves carrying out over 30 scientific experiments during a two-week stay on the ISS. The experiments focus on the impact of spaceflight on human health and disease. Axiom collaborated with SpaceX, and they play a very important role in commercially arranged space missions. They charge at least 55 million dollars per astronaut seat.

The venture shows the global interest in Earth orbit exploration, both for science and prestige.

Difficult words: commercially (for money), venture (a risky journey), prestige (something what makes people feel respect or admiration).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What role does Axiom Space play in commercially arranged space missions, and how much do they charge for an astronaut seat?
