Ukrainian children come home – level 1

11-04-2023 15:00

More than 30 children are back with their families in Ukraine.

These children stay in areas which Russia occupies during the war with Ukraine. These children go to a summer camp. They should stay for two weeks. But they stay from four to six months. Russian authorities take the children away. They keep them in separate buildings. They tell the children that their families do not want them anymore.

A special rescue mission brings the children home. The children travel across four different countries. Ukrainian officials say that Russia deports about 19,500 Ukrainian children.

Difficult words: separate (without contact with each other), rescue mission (an operation in which people find someone and bring him or her back to a safe place), deport (to make someone leave a country).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What strategies have been successful in helping children to reunite with their families after being taken away by Russian authorities?
