Who does Basmati rice belong to? – level 1

02-10-2026 15:00

Basmati is a famous and expensive rice. It grows in a place between India and Pakistan. This place is called Punjab.

Both countries want the name Basmati for themselves in the EU. A special name brings a lot of money and protection. India asks the EU for the name first, and Pakistan asks later. But the two countries do not talk to each other to solve the problem. Because there is no rule yet, many companies sell fake Basmati rice around the world. Almost 90% of Basmati rice in shops does not come from Punjab.

If Europe does not decide soon, the special name Basmati may not be important anymore.

Difficult words: expensive (when something costs a lot of money), protection (rules which stop someone from stealing or copying a product), rule (an official instruction which tells you what you can or cannot do).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What might happen to the importance of the special name Basmati if Europe does not decide soon?
