Why many people are single – level 3

15-01-2026 07:00

More people live alone, and many adults don’t have a partner. In the United States, half of young men and women don’t live with a partner, and similar changes happen in other countries.

The rise of single life grows because people have stopped dating for some time, for example, during the pandemic. Younger adults don’t learn basic skills to meet people or manage feelings of rejection. Technology also changes dating. Many people meet online and can choose partners using rules about height, job, or education. Some choices reduce the number of possible partners. Also, women have more freedom and education, and want men with good jobs and respect.

Many single people enjoy their life and freedom, but 60 to 70 per cent want to have a partner. Some people feel lonely or sad because they can’t meet the right person. Social problems also happen when single people grow, for example, the need for smaller houses and a falling number of children. Even in countries where men and women are equal, the number of single people continues to grow.

Difficult words: rejection (when someone says “no” to you or doesn’t accept you), freedom (the ability to choose what you want or do what you like), equal (when people have the same rights).
