Winter Olympics and the natural world – level 2

14-02-2022 07:00

China is hosting this year’s Winter Olympics, and officials announced that it would use only green technologies, and the Games would have little impact on the natural world.

China is a country with the biggest negative impact on the natural world. Now, the country wants to change the situation. Organizers will use electrical energy only from wind farms, and people will travel to events by 800 buses that use hydrogen instead of petrol or gas.

The biggest problem is that the Games take place in mountains with very little snow. Almost all of the snow is fake. People took months to make enough snow for the Games, and they used the water in the area.

Difficult words: green (the idea to protect the environment), impact (how something affects something else), hydrogen (a light gas which does not harm the natural world as petrol or gas do).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
