US pension system gets a bad rating – level 1

02-09-2025 15:00

The US retirement system is not very strong. In 2024, it gets a C+ grade. Other countries, for example, the Netherlands, do better.

One problem is that people in the US do not always join retirement plans. Another problem is that they take their money out early. Many workers take money from accounts before retirement, for health, houses, or other needs. This makes their savings smaller. Social Security may also have problems with money by 2033.

In other countries, workers must put money into the retirement system, so they save more. In the US, it is a choice, not a rule. Even so, many Americans have good retirement incomes. Experts say that new changes could make the system stronger.

Difficult words: retirement system (the way a country or company organizes money for people when they stop working), income (the money you get, usually from work or investments), choice (something you choose to do).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What difference in contribution rules between the US and other countries contributes to stronger retirement savings abroad?
