Lisbon crash – level 3

09-09-2025 07:00

A serious accident happened in Lisbon when the Glória funicular, a well-known tourist attraction, derailed and crashed into a building.

Sixteen people lost their lives, and more than 20 others were injured. At least six remain in critical condition. The victims included British, Portuguese, South Koreans, Canadians, a Swiss, a Ukrainian, an American, and a French national.

The cause of the disaster is still unclear. The capital’s public transport operator, Carris, explained that the funicular had passed both regular and comprehensive safety inspections, including a check only hours before the crash. Despite this, the vehicle lost control and slammed into the hillside building. Investigators are now examining possible failures, including a detached cable or problems with the braking system. Portuguese police confirmed that crimes are under consideration, particularly negligent homicide, if maintenance duties were not properly carried out. However, they emphasized that there is no current evidence of intentional wrongdoing.

Difficult words: funicular (a small train that goes up and down a steep hill on tracks, usually for tourists), comprehensive (very complete, with many details), negligent homicide (when someone dies because another person or company didn’t take enough care or responsibility).

What potential failures are investigators examining as possible causes of the funicular’s loss of control?
