Lisbon crash – level 1
09-09-2025 07:00
In Lisbon, the Glória funicular has a crash. It goes off the track and hits a building.
Sixteen people die. Three are from Britain. Other people are from Portugal, South Korea, Canada, Switzerland, Ukraine, the USA, and France. More than 20 people have injuries. Six people are very sick.
The public transport company, Carris, says that workers check the funicular many times. They also make a big check in 2024. On the morning of the crash, workers make another check. Everything looks fine, but later, the crash happens.
Police look at the problem. They think the cable or the brakes do not work. They also think maybe the company does not care enough.
Difficult words: funicular (a small train that goes up and down a steep hill on tracks), injury (harm to the body), public transport (buses and trains in a city).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What mechanical failures and company shortcomings do police believe may have led to the accident?
