Greece is closing schools – level 1

15-09-2025 15:00

Greece has a big problem. People are not having many babies. In 2022, only 77,000 babies are born, but 140,000 people die. This means the population is getting smaller.

Greek women usually have their first baby at age 32. The number of children per woman is only 1.35. Because there are fewer kids, Greece will close more than 750 schools. Schools lose 100,000 students over the last seven years.

Other countries also have this problem, like Japan and South Korea. But many European countries have this problem too. Experts say that life costs too much for young people, especially houses, childcare, and education. People wait longer to marry and have children. Experts say that governments must help, or the problem will get worse.

Difficult words: population (all the people in a country), especially (mainly), education (schools).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What expenses do experts say make life too costly for young people, causing them to wait longer to marry and have children?
