New York Sumo Club – level 2

23-09-2025 15:00

The Grand Sumo Tournament in Japan is very popular, and people in New York are now joining this sport too.

In Manhattan, the New York Sumo Club trains in a gym that also has other martial arts. The club started three years ago with only two members, but now it has many more and special mats from Japan. Its founder, Oscar Dolan, wanted a place where anyone could enjoy sumo, no matter their age or gender.

Members like the tradition but also enjoy adding their own style. They wear Sumo belts called mawashi, and dye them in bright colors to show personality. The club’s big event, the Empire Cup, brought 60 wrestlers and many fans. They now work hard to grow the sumo community in New York.

Difficult words: martial art (a type of sport where people use their body or simple weapons to fight), founder (a person who starts a company), personality (the way someone shows who they are).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What did Oscar Dolan hope to achieve by founding the New York Sumo Club?
