Sharks: New suits keep people safer – level 3

17-10-2025 15:00

Researchers at Flinders University in Australia have discovered that new shark-bite-resistant wetsuits can significantly reduce injuries during shark attacks.

These suits are made from materials containing strong fibers such as Kevlar and polyethylene, which help protect against deep cuts and blood loss. Although the suits cannot completely prevent internal injuries, they can lower the number and severity of wounds, giving victims more time to receive emergency help. Tests were done using white and tiger sharks, and the results showed that these new materials performed much better than regular neoprene. Researchers were surprised by how much damage was reduced. Shark attacks are rare, but they can be fatal, so any improvement in protection is important.

Traditional chain mail suits used for diving are too heavy and inflexible for surfers, so the goal now is to make these new materials more flexible while keeping them strong enough to save lives.

Difficult words: Kevlar (a strong synthetic fiber), fatal (causing death), chain mail (small metal rings linked together).
