Politicians and sports – level 2

27-10-2025 07:00

More and more politicians show their fitness to look strong. Polish President Karol Nawrocki often posts gym videos where he lifts weights and boxes. Other leaders, like Putin and Obama, also like to show their sports skills.

Some athletes, like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Vitali Klitschko, later became politicians. Professor Jacek Wasilewski says that people often trust strong leaders because they look powerful and safe. He explains that when life feels uncertain, voters prefer politicians who look like fighters. Nawrocki’s boxing looks brave and serious, while Donald Tusk’s football seems friendly but not powerful.

Showing fitness can help politicians get more support.

Difficult words: brave (not afraid of anything), serious (not funny), support (help or agreement).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What reason does Professor Jacek Wasilewski give for voters’ preference for strong-looking leaders?
