New Alzheimer’s drugs may not help people – level 2

21-04-2026 07:00

New drugs for Alzheimer’s disease are causing a big argument among scientists.

For a long time, people hoped these drugs would be a breakthrough because they clean a special protein out of the brain. A new report says that the benefit for patients is actually very small. It is not enough to change their lives much. Another problem is the cost: the treatment costs about 100,000 euros, which is too high for the UK’s public health system.

Some scientists disagree with the report and say the drugs are still useful. But the authors of the study believe we need to find different ways to treat the disease because these drugs might not be the best solution.

Difficult words: breakthrough (a very important discovery which changes people’s lives), treatment (using medicine, exercise, or rest to help a sick person get better), solution (a way to solve a problem or a difficult situation).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What two drawbacks of the new Alzheimer’s drugs are highlighted in the report?
