Football players have breaks to drink – level 3

14-07-2026 07:00

Scientists are questioning whether FIFA’s current hydration breaks are sufficient to protect football players competing in extreme heat and humidity.

Researchers tested FIFA’s official policy by measuring how a three-minute break in each half affects trained male and female athletes at a high temperature of 32 degrees. The study revealed that these breaks are valuable only if they include active cooling measures. This means players must drink very cold liquids and place ice-water-soaked towels or cooling braces around their necks. The experiments proved that active cooling leads to significant reductions in both thermal and cardiovascular strain, and helps lower the body’s core temperature and heart rate.

The next scientific step is to study the energy production of elite footballers and their clothing under different weather conditions. This will help find the exact safety threshold where extreme heat becomes dangerous for athletes.

Difficult words: hydration (drinking enough water or healthy liquids so that your body has what it needs to work properly), strain (physical pressure, stress, or extreme tiredness on your body or heart), elite (the absolute best, highest, or most talented group of people in a field), threshold (a specific level, point, or limit at which something completely changes or becomes dangerous).

Which active cooling measures did the experiments show were required during three-minute breaks at 32°C to lower players’ core temperature and heart rate?
