A recent study has revealed a gloomy mood among young people in Turkey, and has shown that nearly two-thirds are considering emigrating, primarily toward Europe.

Under President Erdogan’s rule, democracy is increasingly restricted, which leads to fears of political repression. Young artists face severe censorship, as the authorities regularly cancel performances over critical lyrics. In addition, the country is suffering from high inflation and a stagnant economy. This leaves young Turks with bad job prospects and an official unemployment rate of 31%. While some students move abroad to Belgium or France to find a stable career, others choose to stay. Some describe themselves as patriotic and conservative, and they support the government’s actions.

Turkey now faces a danger of losing its youth as young people choose between staying to fight for freedom or seeking success abroad.
