Spain sent soldiers to its North African enclave of Ceuta to stop a huge wave of migrants. Tens of thousands of people tried to enter from Morocco by swimming in the sea or climbing border fences.

Local leaders called the situation an emergency after nine people died trying to cross. Experts say a new court rule influenced the event because it guarantees that migrants get a formal review instead of sending them back immediately. Spanish forces worked quickly to secure the border and manage the crowd.

Soon after arriving, most of the 50,000 migrants decided to turn around and walk back to Morocco. Many said they were very tired, hungry, and realized they couldn’t stay in the city.

Difficult words: enclave (a piece of land or territory which belongs to one country but is inside another country), emergency (a dangerous situation which needs quick action and help), guarantee (to promise or make sure that something will definitely happen).
