Spain deployed its military to the North African enclave of Ceuta after tens of thousands of migrants crossed the border from Morocco by land and sea.

Scenes along the border showed people swimming across, scaling boundary fences, and streaming through open gates, which created an emergency for local authorities.

Spain’s Supreme Court recently ruled that arriving migrants cannot be immediately rejected without following specific legal procedures to guarantee their rights, which experts believe encouraged the sudden influx. Nine bodies were recovered near the coast during the crisis.

However, Spanish authorities quickly managed to reverse the massive rush. With the military present and security measures restored, most of the more than 50,000 people who had crossed the border have already begun heading back to Morocco voluntarily. They said they were exhausted and had no food, and they realized that staying in the enclave wouldn’t be possible.
